AI can now learn language like kids—but we don't know how
For 100,000 years, only human children could learn languages perfectly. Now artificial intelligence systems can too. Scientists are baffled about why or how it happened.
For as long as humans have existed, there has been one simple fact: only children can truly master a language the way native speakers do. They pick up grammar, accent, and meaning almost by osmosis—just by listening and playing.
That changed four years ago. Since the release of ChatGPT in late 2022, AI systems have made dramatic leaps. Now, for the first time, machines can learn and use human language with near-perfect fluency, matching what a young child can do.
But here's the puzzle: nobody really understands why this happened or how it works. Researchers have built these AI systems—essentially mathematical models trained on billions of examples of human text—but the systems have become so complex that even their creators can't fully explain their own creations. It's like building a bridge and then realizing you don't fully understand the physics of how it stands.
This matters because language is fundamental to how humans think, communicate, and understand the world. If machines can now learn it the way we do, it raises big questions about what language ability really means, and what it says about human intelligence itself.
