Google's AI now has a face that talks back to you

Google has given its Gemini AI assistant an animated face that responds in real time. The new 'Live Avatar' can lip-sync and show expressions while chatting with you—but only some users can try it right now.

Google just rolled out a new update to Gemini, its AI assistant (think of it as a smart helper you can chat with). The big change? Gemini now has an animated face on your screen—what Google calls a "Live Avatar"—that moves and talks as you have a conversation.

Here's what makes this different from just hearing a voice: the avatar's mouth actually moves to match the words it's saying, and its face shows different expressions as it responds to you. It's like video chatting with a digital person, except it's an AI. Right now, this feature is only available to Gemini Enterprise customers—that means businesses paying for a special version of the service. Most regular users can't access it yet.

One impressive feature Google highlighted: the Live Avatar can switch between 97 different languages without the video quality getting worse or the face looking glitchy. In a demo, Google showed the avatar speaking English and then switching to Japanese, with the mouth movements matching perfectly each time.

Why does this matter? As AI assistants become more useful in workplaces and daily life, making them feel more human-like—with a face and expressions—might make conversations feel more natural. It could help people feel more comfortable talking to AI, especially in business settings where companies are looking for new ways to interact with customers or automate tasks.
