Google's AI Can Now Call Businesses for You

Your AI Personal Assistant is Here

Google is rolling out a new experiment on its Pixel 11 phones that could save you from one of life's most annoying tasks: waiting on hold. The feature uses Gemini, Google's AI assistant (think of it as a smart computer program that understands what you ask it to do), to make phone calls to local businesses for you.

Here's how it works: instead of picking up your phone yourself, you simply tell Gemini what you need. Want to book a restaurant reservation? Check if a store has your size in stock? Reschedule a doctor's appointment? Just ask Gemini to handle it. The AI will dial the business, introduce itself, wait through any automated phone menus, hold if needed, and have the conversation with whoever picks up. You stay in control the whole time—you can see a live transcript of what's being said and step in whenever you want.

Why This Matters

This is more than just convenience. For people who struggle with phone calls—whether because of anxiety, hearing difficulties, or simply a packed schedule—this could be genuinely life-changing. It also means businesses might get calls answered faster, since AI doesn't get frustrated waiting on hold. Right now, Google is only testing this feature with a limited number of Pixel 11 users, so it's not available to everyone yet. But if it works as intended, it could become a standard feature on many phones.

The key thing to understand: you're always in charge. This isn't an AI running wild making calls without your knowledge. You're directing it, watching what happens, and can take over at any moment.
