OpenAI launches Dots: AI helpers that do tasks for you
OpenAI has unveiled Dots, AI assistants that can handle everyday tasks across your apps automatically. They learn what you like and can chat with you by text or voice.
What are Dots?
OpenAI just announced Dots, a new type of AI assistant designed to help you get things done. Unlike chatbots you have to ask questions, Dots work in the background automatically — a bit like having a helpful digital assistant who knows your habits and can jump in when needed.
How do they work?
Dots are powered by GPT-6 Astra, OpenAI's latest AI model (the "brain" that makes the assistant intelligent). Each Dot has access to over 4,000 popular apps and can browse the web on your behalf. You can chat with a Dot using simple text messages, much like texting a friend, or call it up and speak to it directly from ChatGPT on your phone, computer, or web browser. The key difference: over time, Dots learn what you prefer and can anticipate what you might need.
Why does this matter?
OpenAI is responding to Meta's recent AI assistant called Muse, which grabbed attention for doing similar things. This signals a shift in how AI tools are evolving — away from just answering questions toward actually doing work for you across the apps you already use daily. For everyday users, this could mean less time spent switching between apps or repeating the same tasks manually.
