Dutch broadcaster VPRO launches tool to verify real images
As AI makes it easier to fake photos and videos, VPRO is using a new verification system to prove images are authentic. It's the first major news organization in the Netherlands to do this.
Artificial intelligence is getting better at creating and changing images in ways that are hard to spot. This means it's becoming crucial to know whether a photo or video is real or manipulated. That's why VPRO, one of the Netherlands' main broadcasters, is launching a new tool called Verifieermij.nl (which means "Verify Me").
The tool works by adding a digital fingerprint — think of it like a tamper-proof seal — to images when they're first created or shared. This fingerprint, called C2PA information, proves who created the image and whether it has been edited. It's similar to how a security feature on a banknote tells you it's genuine. The system is open-source, meaning anyone can see how it works and use it freely.
VPRO developed this tool together with Media Campus NL and Dawn Technology. Several VPRO newsrooms will now be the first in the Netherlands to use it when they publish content. By adding this digital signature to their images, VPRO's journalists are telling readers: "This image is real and comes directly from us."
As deepfakes and AI-generated images become more common, tools like this help restore trust in news. If you see an image with this verification system, you'll know someone reliable has checked it and confirmed its authenticity.
